What Upfirst is — in our words

Upfirst is a self-serve AI receptionist built for a small business that cannot afford to miss calls but also cannot justify a traditional answering service. You point it at your website, tidy the facts it learns about your hours, services and prices, connect a calendar, and forward your number. From there it answers around the clock, in more than 35 languages, greeting callers in your business name, asking the intake questions you set, and sorting genuine enquiries from spam. The detail that makes it unusually solo-friendly is the billing and the feature policy. It charges by the call, not by the minute, so a long, careful intake conversation costs the same as a quick question, and spam, robocalls and hang-ups under 15 seconds are not billed at all. Every plan includes the full feature set, including booking, transfers and texting, so the cheapest tier is not a crippled demo. For a solo founder that matters because the work is predictable: you can read the call log, listen to recordings, see summaries and transcripts, and know exactly which calls you paid for. Setup is genuinely light, with a free onboarding call if you want it, and there are no contracts or setup fees. The trade-off is volume. If your phone rings hundreds of times a month, per-call pricing stops being the bargain it is at low volume, and you will move up tiers quickly. It is also an AI-only service, so a caller who insists on a person, or a conversation that needs judgement and negotiation, still has to be transferred to you.

What it does end-to-end

  • Answers calls 24/7 and greets callers using your business details and FAQs
  • Books appointments directly into Google Calendar, Outlook, Calendly, Acuity, Square or Clio
  • Qualifies callers with your intake questions and captures name, number and reason for calling
  • Warm-transfers urgent calls to you with context, and blocks spam without billing for it
  • Sends call summaries, recordings and transcripts after every call

What it does NOT do

  • No live human receptionist backup when a caller refuses to talk to AI
  • Not the cheapest option once call volume passes a few hundred calls a month
  • Cannot negotiate, quote complex jobs or handle sensitive disputes on its own

Billed per call, not per minute. Every plan includes all features; spam and calls under 15 seconds are never billed, and extra calls cost less as tiers rise.

Pros — our take

  • Lowest published entry price here and all features on every plan
  • Per-call billing removes minute anxiety and spam is never billed
  • Calendar booking is native, not an add-on or a higher-tier unlock

Cons — our take

  • Per-call costs climb steadily at high volume
  • AI-only, with no human fallback service to escalate to
  • Each additional agent costs $9.95/month on top of the plan
