Great for a DIY founder who wants a website agent now, with the catch that credit maths — not conversation count — decides your real bill.

True solo cost — low volume~$40/mo — 1 agent, assumption: Hobby at $40/mo monthly covers ~50 resolved conversations at roughly 3 credits per conversation (~150 credits, well within 700); $32/mo if billed annually
True solo cost — typical volume~$150/mo — 1 agent, assumption: Basic at $150/mo monthly ($120/mo annually) for ~200 resolved conversations once Actions are enabled and conversations average 5+ credits each, pushing past Hobby's 700 credits; a lean Q&A-only agent on a cheap model can stay on Hobby at $40/mo
No-code score (4/5)

What Chatbase is — in our words

Chatbase is a build-your-own AI agent platform rather than a helpdesk. You create an agent, train it on your website, help docs, files and pasted text, choose a model, and deploy it as a website chat widget and, on higher plans, across WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Slack and voice, with a built-in helpdesk inbox arriving at the Basic tier. That makes it attractive to a technical-leaning solo founder who wants an agent on a marketing site or product today, without migrating email support anywhere. Its Actions and Procedures let the agent call external systems — checking data, booking through Calendly, looking up order or account information via connected tools and APIs — and integrations with Zendesk, Intercom, Freshdesk, Gorgias and others let unresolved conversations flow into a real inbox. Handoff and human takeover exist, but this is not an email-first support operation; teams that live in tickets will feel the seams. The pricing trap is credits. Every model request burns message credits, a single conversation with actions can burn several, and premium models burn more, so a cheap Hobby plan can evaporate faster than the conversation count suggests. You control that by choosing a leaner model and limiting actions, and auto-recharge stops the agent going dark — at a price. No-code friendly, but it rewards tinkerers.

What it does end-to-end

  • Deploys a trained AI agent to your website fast, plus WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and voice on higher plans
  • Learns from your website, documents and files, with 40 MB of training content per agent
  • Calls external systems through Actions and Procedures, such as lookups and bookings
  • Connects to Zendesk, Intercom, Freshdesk, Gorgias and other helpdesks for handoff

What it does NOT do

  • Replace a full helpdesk — its own inbox and ticketing only arrive on Basic and stay light
  • Charge per conversation — it charges per model request in credits, so costs vary by model and actions
  • Guarantee predictable spend without you managing model choice and auto-recharge settings

Flat monthly plan for a bundle of message credits — each AI model request spends credits, so one conversation typically spends several credits

Pros — our take

  • Fastest route to a capable agent on a website or landing page
  • Wide model choice and integrations for a founder who likes to tinker
  • Hobby is genuinely cheap for low-volume, simple question answering

Cons — our take

  • Credit burn is opaque in practice — actions and premium models multiply the cost per conversation
  • Helpdesk features are thin compared with inbox-first rivals
  • Removing Chatbase branding and getting headroom pushes you up the tiers

Other answer customers agents

Easiest first AI agent for a solo shop — learns your help pages and answers chat and email in minutes

The best starting point for most solo shops, with the catch that you pay for the inbox and the AI as two separate products.

True solo cost (typical)~$189/mo — 1 operator, assumption: Growth at $49.17/mo billed annually + Lyro 200-conversation quota at ~$140/mo monthly billing (~$0.70/conversation at that tier) = ~$189/mo for ~200 resolved conversations

Email-first shared inbox with a simple $0.75 AI agent for founders who live in email

Ideal if email is your main channel, with the catch that it answers questions rather than doing ecommerce jobs for you.

True solo cost (typical)~$175/mo — 1 seat, assumption: Standard $25/mo billed annually + 200 resolutions × $0.75 = $175/mo for ~200 resolved conversations

One flat workspace price for chat, email and social — AI credits included, no per-seat shock

The most budget-predictable option if you adopt its inbox, with the catch that the useful AI starts at $95, not $45.

True solo cost (typical)~$95/mo — 1 workspace, assumption: Essentials at $95/mo is needed for ~200 resolved conversations (Mini's ~90 allowance is too small); Essentials includes ~450, so 200 fits flat with no extra seat cost
