The short version

Found folds your business checking account and your books into one free app: spending is categorised as it happens, taxes are estimated and set aside live, and year-end forms are generated from the same records.

Buy it if

You are a freelancer or single-member LLC happy to run business money through one account, and you want bookkeeping and tax estimates at $0 instead of a ledger subscription.

Skip it if

You already keep books in QuickBooks or Xero, your income lands across several banks and cards you will not consolidate, or you need accrual books or a filed annual return.

What Found does — the jobs it finishes

Workflows are built only from verified capabilities in our listing research — no vendor copy, nothing invented.

Spending that categorises itself

Starts You pay for something with your Found card or receive a deposit

  1. The transaction is categorised automatically and write-offs are flagged
  2. You tag by client or project and adjust anything the automation got wrong

You get Books that stay current without a monthly data-entry session

Bookkeeping becomes a by-product of banking, not a separate chore

Taxes set aside as you earn

Starts Income lands in the account

  1. A share is moved automatically into the Taxes Pocket
  2. The real-time estimate updates with your income and write-offs

You get A tax reserve and a live estimate instead of an April surprise

Quarterly taxes stop being a cash-flow shock

Invoice to 1099 without a second tool

Starts You bill a client or pay a contractor

  1. Send unlimited invoices from the same account that receives payment
  2. For contractors, request the W-9 in-app and generate and e-file the 1099-NEC at year-end

You get Billing and contractor compliance handled inside the books

Two classic solo admin jobs disappear into the account you already use

Outside money pulled in (Plus)

Starts Income or spending also sits in other banks, apps or cards

  1. Connect up to 10 outside accounts on Found Plus
  2. Imports are categorised with your rules and custom categories

You get One set of books across all your accounts

Approval You choose which accounts to connect; the free plan never sees outside money

The free plan's blind spot is the paid tier's whole job

Where it stops

  • Does not work inside an existing QuickBooks or Xero ledger, and is not a replacement ledger for money held elsewhere on the free plan
  • Does not file your annual tax return — it generates Schedule C / 1120-S forms and (on Plus/Pro) pays quarterly estimates in-app
  • Free plan cannot import transactions from other banks, apps or cards — that starts on Found Plus
  • Not a bank itself: banking services are provided by Lead Bank, Member FDIC, and paid-plan APY is variable

Getting started

Before you start

  • A US self-employed business (freelancer, sole proprietor or single-member LLC shape)
  • Willingness to route business income and spending through the Found account

The ongoing admin

  • Review auto-categorised transactions and correct tags
  • Check the tax estimate and Pocket balance before each quarterly deadline
  • Watch transactional fees (wires, cash deposits) rather than the plan price
Step 1

Open the free account

Sign up in as little as 5 minutes per the vendor; no monthly fee and no minimum balance.

Step 2

Move your business money in

Point client payments at Found and spend on the Found card so categorisation sees the full picture.

Step 3

Set your tax set-aside

Turn on the Taxes Pocket and check the real-time estimate against what you expect to owe.

Step 4

Decide on Plus only when you need it

Plus matters when outside accounts need importing or you want in-app quarterly payments; it comes with a 30-day free trial.

What could make the bill jump?

Not volume — visibility: the free plan only books what flows through Found itself, so the moment income or spending sits in outside accounts you need Plus ($315/year) to import it. Transactional fees (wires $15, cash deposits $2, mailed checks $1) sit outside every plan.

Best for

  • Freelancers and single-member LLCs who can bank where they bookkeep
  • 1099 earners who want tax set-aside and estimates handled automatically
  • Solos paying contractors who want W-9s and 1099-NECs inside the same app

Not for

  • Businesses committed to QuickBooks or Xero as their ledger
  • Anyone whose money is spread across accounts they will not consolidate or pay to import
  • Businesses needing accrual accounting, payroll or a filed annual return

Our assessment of Found

Found is not a ledger you bolt onto your bank — it is the bank account, with the books kept inside it. Open the free business checking account (banking services are provided by Lead Bank, Member FDIC; Found itself is a financial technology company) and every card payment and deposit is categorised automatically, write-offs are flagged, receipts can be scanned straight onto transactions, and a live tax estimate updates as money moves, with a Taxes Pocket that sets money aside automatically. Profit and loss, income and expense reports, a balance sheet and a chart of accounts are all in the free plan, as are unlimited invoices, contractor payments with W-9 collection and 1099-NEC e-filing, and generated Schedule C and 1120/1120-S forms. The paid tiers are about reach and yield, not basic books: Found Plus at $35 a month ($315 a year) adds importing and syncing up to 10 outside bank, app and card accounts, auto-categorisation rules, custom categories, in-app quarterly federal tax payments and 1.50% APY on balances up to $20,000; Found Pro at $80 a month ($720 a year) raises that to 2.50% APY uncapped, adds 1% cash back and a dedicated account manager. The honest framing matters: this is the bank-account-with-books route for a freelancer whose money can actually live in Found. It does not work inside QuickBooks or Xero, bookkeeping data download is a Plus feature, and if your income lands in other accounts, the free plan cannot see it — Plus is the tier that pulls it in. It also prepares tax forms rather than filing your annual return.

Pros — our take

  • The books are genuinely free when your money lives in the account — categorisation, reports and tax estimates included at $0
  • Taxes are handled as a habit, not a season: automatic set-aside, live estimates and generated Schedule C
  • Contractor payments, W-9 collection and 1099-NEC e-filing carry no per-contractor fee on every plan

Cons — our take

  • It only works if your business money moves into Found — it is a bank switch, not a ledger add-on
  • Outside-account imports, rules and data download are paywalled behind Plus at $315/year
  • It generates tax forms and pays quarterly estimates; your annual return is still yours to file

Solo Fit stays the public score: the qualitative roll-up of these four published inputs under the How We Rank method. There is nothing to install or configure — the account is the setup — and pricing is a flat free/Plus/Pro ladder; clarity is held back only by the transactional fees that sit outside the plans.

Three to compare before you decide

Wave Accounting$19/mo · Solo-Ready

The difference: Wave is a ledger you keep alongside your existing bank, free to start and $19/month for bank feeds; Found is the bank account itself, free with books inside, but only for money you move into it.

FreshBooks$43/mo · Solo-Ready

The difference: FreshBooks is an invoicing-led ledger priced by billable clients from $23/month; Found starts at $0 because banking is the product and the books ride along.

QuickBooks Online$85/mo · Solo-Ready

The difference: QuickBooks Online is the full ledger your accountant already knows, rented monthly; Found is narrower bookkeeping that costs nothing because it lives inside your checking account.

Questions buyers ask about Found

What does Found cost for one person?

The standard account is $0/month, checked on found.com/pricing on 2026-11-05, and it includes automatic categorisation, reports, tax estimates, unlimited invoices and 1099-NEC e-filing. Found Plus is $35/month or $315/year and Found Pro is $80/month or $720/year; those tiers mainly buy outside-account imports, quarterly payments in-app and APY.

Is Found a bank?

No. Found is a financial technology company; banking services are provided by Lead Bank, Member FDIC, per the vendor's own pages. That distinction matters if partner-bank arrangements are a concern for you.

Can Found replace QuickBooks for a freelancer?

Only in its own shape: if your business money runs through Found, its built-in books (categorisation, P&L, balance sheet, chart of accounts, Schedule C generation) can be your whole system. It does not work inside QuickBooks or Xero, and money in outside accounts is invisible to the free plan — Plus imports up to 10 outside accounts.

Does Found file my taxes?

It prepares, it does not file your annual return. It estimates taxes in real time, sets money aside automatically, generates Schedule C and 1120/1120-S forms, pays quarterly federal estimates in-app on Plus/Pro, and generates and e-files 1099-NECs for contractors.
