The short version
Zoho Books is a full double-entry ledger priced per organization: free under $50K of revenue, then $15 a month billed annually for Standard.
Buy it if
You want a real ledger at the lowest published cost here, you are comfortable operating accounting software yourself, and per-organization pricing with 3 included users beats per-seat rivals.
Skip it if
You want a human bookkeeper included, your books to close themselves, or payroll inside the same price — Zoho Books is self-serve software and payroll is a separate product.
What Zoho Books does — the jobs it finishes
Workflows are built only from verified capabilities in our listing research — no vendor copy, nothing invented.
Invoice, remind, reconcile
Starts Work is done and an invoice goes out
- Create and send the invoice; customers can pay online through the portal
- Automated payment reminders chase late payers
- Payments reconcile against your bank feed on Standard and up
You get Invoices chased and matched without a separate tool
The money-in loop runs inside the ledger
Receipts scanned into expenses
Starts A receipt or bill lands in your inbox or phone
- Autoscan reads the document (50 a month on Free, 200 on Standard and Professional, 1,000 on Premium and up)
- The expense is created from the scan for your review
- Extra scans are available as a priced add-on
You get Expenses captured at the source, not reconstructed at year-end
Approval You review scanned expenses before they settle into the books
No shoebox of receipts to type up in March
Books ready for 1099 season
Starts Year-end approaches and contractors need their forms
- Track 1099 contractors and W-9s during the year
- Prepare 1099s inside Zoho Books
- E-file 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC on Standard and above
You get Filed 1099s from data already in the ledger
One January chore disappears — though your income tax return is still yours to file
Reports your accountant can open
Starts A lender, partner or accountant asks for statements
- Run P&L, balance sheet and 50+ reports from live data
- Export to PDF, CSV, XLS or XLSX within the stated record limits
- Invite your accountant — the free plan includes an accountant seat
You get Statements in standard formats from the same books
No spreadsheet translation before a serious conversation
Where it stops
- No human bookkeeper or reviewer is included — you operate the software yourself
- Does not file your business income tax return (1099 filing is included, income tax is not)
- Payroll is a separate Zoho product, not part of these plan prices
- The free plan ends once revenue passes $50K for the financial year
Getting started
Before you start
- A business with revenue under $50K a year to start free, or any size on a paid plan
- Bank accounts to connect for feeds (Standard and up)
- Your own accountant or filing route for income taxes, which Zoho Books does not file
The ongoing admin
- Review categorisation and reconciliation yourself — no human bookkeeper is included
- Watch the $50K revenue threshold on the free plan and your autoscan cap
Step 1Start free or on the 14-day trial
Sign up in the browser — no installation — and begin on the free plan if revenue is under $50K, or trial a paid plan for 14 days.
Step 2Set up the organization and connect the bank
Add your organization details, invite users within your cap (3 on Standard), and connect bank feeds for automatic import.
Step 3Turn on reminders and autoscans
Enable automated payment reminders, recurring invoices and receipt autoscans so the routine work runs from week one.

What could make the bill jump?
The jumps are tier steps, not meters: crossing $50K of revenue ends the free plan (Standard is $15/mo billed annually), and inventory or multi-currency needs push you to Professional at $40. Extra users ($3/mo) and autoscan packs are the only creeping costs.

Best for

- Anyone who needs payroll inside the same subscription
Our assessment of Zoho Books
Zoho Books is a full double-entry accounting system from Zoho's large business-app suite, priced per organization rather than per user, and it is unusually generous at the bottom: a free plan covers one user plus an accountant for businesses under $50,000 of revenue a year, and the first paid tier, Standard, is $15 a month billed annually ($20 monthly) for three users. Every plan is the ledger itself — invoices, quotes, expenses and journals, bank reconciliation, profit and loss, balance sheet and 50-plus reports — with receipt autoscans, automated payment reminders, a customer portal and 1099 preparation included from the free tier. Paid tiers mainly raise caps and depth: Standard connects bank feeds and adds API access; Professional adds inventory, multi-currency, projects and approvals; Premium adds budgets, fixed assets and cash-flow forecasting; Elite and Ultimate are inventory and analytics tiers most solos will never need. Extra users cost $3 a month ($2.50 billed annually), and add-ons such as extra autoscans are priced on the same page. For a solo founder the appeal is value and breadth inside one subscription, especially if you already use other Zoho apps. The catches are that it is software you operate yourself — no human bookkeeper reviews your books — the plan ladder rewards a little setup patience, and payroll is a separate Zoho product rather than part of these prices.
Pros — our take
- A genuinely free full ledger under $50K of revenue, and the cheapest paid ladder here
- Per-organization pricing with generous user and invoice caps — no per-seat trap
- 1099 preparation and filing, autoscans and payment reminders included from the free tier
Cons — our take
- Software you operate yourself — no human bookkeeper reviews anything
- Payroll is a separate Zoho subscription, not in these prices
- The deeper tiers and Zoho-suite breadth are more than most solos will ever use

Three to compare before you decide
The difference: QuickBooks is the ledger most US accountants already know, but its entry tier is $38/month against Zoho's free plan and $15 Standard — you pay for the ecosystem and familiarity.
The difference: Xero charges no per-user fees and is strong on accountant collaboration, but has no free plan and starts at a higher US price than Zoho's Standard.
The difference: FreshBooks is simpler and invoice-first, but caps billable clients per tier; Zoho is a fuller ledger with far higher invoice caps per dollar.
Questions buyers ask about Zoho Books
What does Zoho Books cost for one person?
Nothing while your revenue is under $50K a year: the free plan covers 1 user plus 1 accountant and 1,000 invoices a year. After that, Standard is $15/month billed annually ($20 monthly) per organization for 3 users. Most solos never need Professional at $40/month billed annually, which adds inventory and multi-currency.
Is the free plan a trial?
No. The free plan is indefinite while revenue stays under $50K for the financial year. Separately, paid plans offer a 14-day free trial, and Zoho Books is pay-as-you-go with no contract.
Does Zoho Books file my taxes?
Partly. It prepares and files 1099s — e-filing of 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC starts on Standard — and tracks sales tax. It does not file your business income tax return; that stays with you or your accountant.
What could make the bill jump?
Tier steps, not meters: passing $50K of revenue ends the free plan, and needing inventory or multi-currency moves you to Professional at $40/month billed annually. Extra users cost $3/month each and extra receipt autoscans $10 per 50 a month. Payroll is a separate Zoho product.
